The Workwoman’s Guide

Written “By a Lady”
1838

“Instructions to the inexperienced in cutting out and completing those of articles of wearing apparel, etc., which are usually made at home; also, explanations on upholstery, straw-platting, bonnet-making, knitting, etc.”

For those confused about the measurements used throughout the book, there is a guide on page 14, but we’ll also put it here:

2 1/4 inches = 1 nails
4 nails = 1 quarter (9 inches)
4 quarters = 1 yard (36 inches)
5 quarters = 1 English ell (45 inches)
6 quarters = 1 French ell (54 Inches)
